SHOULDER SERIES: HANGING
We are the ancestors of great climbers! Because we climb so little now, our overhead reaching and lifting patterns have diminished and we have lose that ability. Grip force turns to garbage, shoulder blades don't work well, shoulders get impinged all the damn time... Hanging is the best way develop appropriate scapular strength for pulling and it gives the shoulder the space it needs to function well. There are SO many ways you can hang and play. Here are a few I entertain.
PASSIVE & ACTIVE:
Passive hang is exactly as it sounds. Gripping the bar and letting everything else hang loose 🤙. Then actively engage the Scaps, drawing them down your back. Don't let the lower back arch.
HANGING SCAP CIRCLES:
This little baby requires a bit more attention to the T-spine. Regardless of circle direction 🔄🔃: When the Scaps are forward, hollow out through the chest and when the scaps are back, open it up. Back and down is always the hardest and while there, try to keep the core braced to limit lumbar movement.
LATERAL WT SHIFT:
This one is pretty easy. It is basically alternating one scap activation at a time, creating a weight shift. Start by keeping both hands on the bar during the weight shift and then proceed to taking the unweighted hand off of the bar. Keep the core braced, it can get a little rocky.
SINGLE ARM SCAP HANG: (my new fave) This requires the same single scap retraction and depression as the weight shift. The goal of this one, is to keep the whole body as long as possible while keeping the shoulder blade gripped.
Start with low reps and durations and build up from there. Beat your chest, eat a banana and call it a day.🎵Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.-James Dean🎵
I haven't posted a Loki dance video in a while .... 😬🐶🙈 When I first started sharing videos of the two of us waltzing around the kitchen a couple years ago, he weighed around 45lbs and was much easier to twirl. Now he's almost 5 years old and it's a struggle bus to lift his ass 😂 anyone want to guess how much he weighs now??? 😬😂😂😂😂🐄
