Extraordinary genetics obviously have a huge influence in sporting success. But when you look at ELITE athletes, the differentiating factor between the elite and the very good is rarely physical or genetic, especially in sports that have a high skill and strategic component. Surely us mere mortals can learn a thing or two from those at the top of their game?
The first element is... # HAVE A REASON TO WORK HARD
Average Joe isn’t especially happy with his life. But he’s not unhappy enough to do anything about it. That’s no man’s land and Joe is at high risk of waking up an old man thinking, “is this it?” #
Elite athletes have a vivid vision for their future that excites them so much, they’ll do whatever it takes to get there. They wake up every day with purpose and passion.
Elite athletes go the extra distance. They push themselves harder. They study harder. They seek the extra 1%. They demand more from themselves. They do all these things when it’s hard, when it’s inconvenient, even when they don’t want to. Why? Because they have a big enough reason.
So how do you go from Average Joe’s level of motivation to the drive of an elite athlete? One thing you must do is start with the end in mind. Yours might not be the Olympic final, the Superbowl, the World Cup Final, but the latter stages of your life is a great place to start. Imagine yourself at the end of your life looking back at the life you’ve lived.
At this point most people think “yup, got that, understand that, heard it before, what’s the next secret you can give me for extra quick fixes to an amazing life?!” That’s exactly what Average Joe thinks too.
Understanding how this works isn’t enough. DO IT! This takes real effort and creativity. Spend just 5, dedicated, uninterrupted minutes thinking about the life you want to be looking back upon. Average Joe will intellectualise this information, and go back to his average life. The elite will do the hard work of thinking, creating, and imagining things in detail until they figure it.
