#tbt to one of the first members of Penn AC and one of the most successful rowers in American history, John “Jack” Kelly Sr.
In his career Jack won 126 consecutive races, won the @thegoldcup in 1920, was an Olympic Champion in both the single AND the double in 1920, Olympic Champion in the double in 1924, and a self made millionaire from his brick laying company.
Jack also served as Commodore for the Schuylkill Navy, and President of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen, the predecessor of @usrowing.
In recognition of his achievements, every year USRowing presents the Jack Kelly Award to the individual who represents the ideals that Jack exemplified: “superior achievements in rowing, service to amateur athletics, and success in their chosen profession, thereby serving as an inspiration to American rowers.”
We’re proud to name Jack as one of our own, and strive to develop our athletes to be like him.
