A ton of inspiring tv comedy to catch up on. This genre has been recently overlooked when it comes to conversations on society and culture. That's a mistake. There are deeply funny programs that are pushing boundaries and proving that comedy could be a universal language when it's not made by the narrow minded.
#IssaRae has been really inspiring on #Insecure. There's a truth to her comedy that doesn't need to be embellished by a false note. Her sharp writing is striking and her nuanced performance stands among the best of film and television comedy. We're welcomed to join Issa in her world, seeing it through her comedic lens every step of the way.
#TheGoodPlace has been proving itself to be endlessly inventive and pushes the world building of a comedy to a whole new level. I could safely say that there's nothing like this show. The humor has defied tropes and shows that the genre isn't bound to the archetypes that we've rolled our eyes at in the past.
The British comedy #Back stars the duo of #DavidMitchell and #RobertWebb, who caught my attention with the hilarious dating sitcom #PeepShow. With that series ended, they didn't stop there and took the dark comedy up a notch. "Back" follows the death of the father of a family that owned the family Pub. With the business up in the air, a man claiming to have been raised as one of the family's foster children for a brief period in the 1980's has returned with grand plans for the business, much to the dismay of the son who thought he'd immediately be put in charge. The team adds a new drama to their brand of humor that asks you to take a lens to your relationship with your own family and remember things the way that they really happened.

"Belief, like fear of love, is a force to be understood as we understand the theory of relativity and principals of uncertainty. Phenomena that determine the course of our lives. Yesterday, my life was headed in one direction. Today, it is headed in another. Yesterday, I believe I would never have done what I did today. These forces that often remake time and space, that can shape and alter who we imagine ourselves to be, begin long before we are born and continue after we perish. Our lives and our choices, like quantum trajectories, are understood moment to moment. That each point of intersection, each encounter, suggest a new potential direction." #DavidMitchell#cloudatlas#moodtoday
Life, the teacher.
This struck a chord as I feel that I am sometimes guilty of relying on what makes Tom Tom happy. We do push him out of his comfort zone, is that what this means? I don’t know. But it is worth being reminded that limiting him is never going to help anyone. And every time we do anything new, it is a challenge but one we have always overcome. Sometimes, being the parent of an autistic child though, I think it can seem very attractive to go with the less seemingly traumatic option. Who for? We find it hard? What must Tom Tom think?
I urge you to read Naoki Higashida. His insights into his mind take my understanding of Tom Tom to a new level. I don’t stay at that level, I need refreshing. And I am under no illusion that one person with autism is like any other. Naoki’s books help me to be more reflective. To consider how I am and how Tom Tom is. I assume I respond in the best way. I am his mother. I want what is best, but it is important to check ourselves too. Is this right? Is this what is best for my child? Any parent thinks that but with a child who cannot always express their fears and joys, I find myself in a perpetual state of second guessing and that takes its toll. I hope my lovely TomTom is happy. Having read Naoki Higashida’s second book, “Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight”, in one sitting, I strive to explain more, to give TomTom clearer guidance on the whys and wherefores of this world. They attach themselves like Velcro to neurotypical children. I will be Tom Tom’s Velcro as will Alex and my amazing @will_paston ❤️❤️
Hmm yes I think I'm on the fence with that one. Will have a think about it when I have the time, but I'm snowed under at the moment. Literally LOL!

November haul. A real mix of books came to join my shelves this month. I’m currently reading and loving Mary Beard at the moment but I’ve a feeling I’m going to love quite a few of these. I’m not sure about The Caine Mutiny but I looked so cute that for 30p I couldn’t resist!! 💛 #Novemberbookhaul#bookstacks#belletriststacked
What are you reading this week? I picked up Slade House for my last November read before I dive into my holiday stack. Slade House compelled me to stay up late more than one night this week and it’ll definitely be one of my recommendations for spooky reads next year. If you’re a David Mitchell fan, tell me which of his other books you love - this was my first read from him and I’m definitely interested in more!
When you fly @cathaydragon_airways check out their inflight magazine. Summer fiction issue with stories from the cities they fly to. I illustrated a short by #davidmitchell this is a cover drawing in progress.
