My ode to the Moonwatch. While G-Shocks were my intro to watches two decades ago, it was the Omega Speedmaster Professional that really shifted my interest toward mechanical timepieces.
I guess I've always had a fascination with space. I still remember the wonder I felt on my first big field trip to the Huntsville space museum in elementary school. Even now I make it a point to look up at the night sky and stargaze every chance I get, and the Radiolab episode on space actually got me a little choked up (highly recommended listening if you've yet to hear it).
It's no wonder then that the Speedy Pro is so appealing to me, and no surprise that when I bought my first "high end" mechanical timepiece that it was this 3572.50 hesalite sandwich Speedmaster. I specifically wanted a display back model with hesalite front crystal narrowing my search down to 3592.50 and 3572.50 references, and as I tend to be a bracelet guy I wanted a super luminova dial as I think non-faded lume looks better with the metal. This further narrowed my search to a ~3 year span of time that the lume-dialed 3572.50 reference was produced.
I also wanted an all original, unpolished example--which this one is indeed unpolished. This particular watch was made circa 2001, the year I graduated high school, and when I bought it years later it was still in mint condition. I wanted a clean slate to put my own memories into.
This isn't a limited production model nor is it that difficult to find, but it's exactly what I was looking for, and it's special to me in many ways. To me it represents child-like wonder, hard work, perseverance, great achievements and everything that is beautiful about this hobby. My Sub definitely gets worn more regularly, but this is a much more special watch to me. That's my Speedmaster story and why I love this particular piece so much. Viva la Speedy!
The new state of the collection 😊 my short and mid term watch goals achieved. Shoutout to @theloniouszeron and @tgv1983 for turning a curiosity into an obsession/ passion! I’m not sure my wife would thank you but I do 🙏🏻
